A COMEDIAN carried on cracking jokes while she was having a brain tumour removed.

Sarah-May Philo, 35, was conscious throughout the nine-hour op and used gags from her stand-up routines to keep calm.

The trained opera singer, who chose to stay awake so her brain function could be monitored, also belted out Ave Maria and ad-libbed comedy songs.

She said: “About halfway through, the surgeon said, ‘Oops’. I was like, ‘What do you mean oops? Don’t say that when you’ve got my brain open’.

“Everyone burst out laughing. It really broke the ice.”

Sarah-May, who was “pretty spaced out” on painkillers, added: “Part of my comedy routine was making up songs.

“The speech therapist asked if I could sing so I started making up songs about her, the surgeons and anaesthetist.”

Sarah-May, also a teacher in Glasgow, had surgery in March followed by chemo. Fifteen per cent of the tumour remains.

She will marry partner Paul Griffin in June and said: “I’m feeling very good. I’m back to school and the kids are asking about my bald head. It’s funny and lovely.”
